Do directories, backlinks and launch sites help?
What 6 makers on MakerMap learned about it, in their own words: their best posts on X, filed under Marketing.
Mmiddlemensch12@middlemensch12 · 29 Sept 20264/7 I launched the initial frame: no extra fluff, straightforward, old-school directory. Main emphasis was on SEO and GEO. Social was mostly for me to arrange my thoughts.
Google accepted it quite well. Then I started thinking about backlinks—apparently, DR is one of the most important things in this industry. I read "DR" at least 1,000 times over the past months; it became an obsession. And that’s where the first obstacle surfaced: You can't get a backlink if you have no DR (at least 10), but you can't have DR 10 with no backlinks.
I didn't want to spend $1,000 on this. It's just time and persistence, no way around it. You find ways to get those backlinks somehow. Time + grind + patience = a lot of frustrations. But yeah, it is what it is.

Hheynmodi@heynmodi · 3 Oct 2026Looked at 26 launch sites side by side recently.
Most of their traffic comes from founders submitting, not buyers browsing.
The audience there is other builders. Plan for that, don't fight it.

Ddanielkbuilds@danielkbuilds · 19 Sept 2026Interesting note regarding backlinks. I did maybe 5 manual asks for my tax calculator tool.
It's still got to DR 30, with 726 referring domains/2k backlinks. Almost entirely earned from people citing specific guides in their own content.
Shows that decent, accurate content that answers questions gets linked to on its own. Outreach does speed it up, but it's not the only way.

Cceohushapp@ceohushapp · 25 Sept 2026✅ Get listed on niche directories relevant to your product
✅ Write guest posts on sites your audience actually reads
✅ Land 5 links from DR40+ sites that took real work to get
✅ Build relationships with people in your niche first, links follow naturally
✅ Publish something genuinely useful (a tool, a data study, a template) — links come to you instead of you chasing them
✅ Track referring domains + organic traffic together — DR means nothing if it's not moving rankings
